Feeling the Love...

Over the past few days it would seem so many of us have been going through hard times. Illness, unemployment, family problems and general melancholy have been some of the issues facing the SM populous at large.

One single post is all it takes for the love to start pouring in.

The other day I checked into Sunnybrook Hospital Emergency on foursquare. I typically don't publish those types of check-ins, but this time I forgot to make it private. Foursquare did it's job and published my check-in on twitter and facebook.

(here's a screen shot in case there was any doubt)

Shortly there after I started to receive best wishes from followers, and it felt sincere. It was like they (the followers) were really concerned and offering to help if I need anything.
I was touched.
All the response helped me feel strong for my family member, who was admitted into Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
After thanking everyone for their well wishes and heart felt concern, I knew that I will always have a kind word to say when I see that others might be having a hard day.

It's crazy how 140 characters can feel like a hug.

Social Media Guerrilla Marketing Seminar with @ShaneGibson

I thought it might be nice to share my notes from the Seminar. I found @ShaneGibson to be engaging and real. I enjoyed his seminar and would love to attend more.

I hope I'm not trampling on any Copyrights by doing this. If it goes missing you know why. (probably a cease and desist)

Shane Gibson is an author, and big time public speaker who actually takes the time to update his twitter accounts. :D (not one of these guru/ninja/storm trooper guys)

AH... #FollowFriday

It is a weekly tradition that takes place on Twitter. Follow Friday. YAY! well kinda, not really.
Before I tell you what I like and dislike about #FollowFriday you might want to know what it is. I'm not quite sure how it came about but you can't miss it on Fridays.
#FollowFriday and it's shorter version #FF are used to suggest people you like and follow to your followers.

If you do this for #FF you're doing it wrong:
  • 1 Tweet 10 names in a #FF mention: It's so much better when you can choose one person and write a bit about why others should follow them. Following this logic only send out a few #FF mentions per week. It really brings up the value of your suggestions.
  • RT-ing (Retweeting) a list of #FF: please stop this habit it's just useless
  • RT-ing a #FF that mentions you: I know some people may be doing it to thank the person for tweeting it but... It may also annoy your followership.
Have I unfollowed any one because of the above listed offences? No. I still follow people who make these #FF blunders because I like them and followed them for a reason. I enjoy their tweets and may even know some of them IRL.

Here are some good tips for sending out your #FF love:
  • Only mention one tweep per #FF tweet: It's great to mention a few things about the person your suggesting that would make others want to follow them.
  • If you're going to send out #FF tweets don't send out 100000000 of them: It's always best to only send out a few suggestions per week. This will also increase the value of your suggestions.

I May Shoot Myself in the Foot but, At Least I'm Consistent.

So... This past week in my "Social Media Life" I received a DM (direct message) from a follower who gave me an ultimatum. I was surprised that some one would have the gumption regardless of what their professional capacity is to give me an ultimatum based on my social media use and preference.
I was shocked and incredibly dismayed that this "follower", happens to dislike one of the third party location based applications that I use and occasionally use to update my twitter account.
Anyhow, this "follower" sends me a DM which I mistook for someone looking to have a conversation about said third party application. Man was I wrong. Thankfully it did not get too ugly, but I made sure that person was aware that I am not accustomed to ultimatums in my personal or professional life. Furthermore if the the ultimatum was either stop using the third party app or loose them as a follower, I'm sure you know what decision I made.
I don't even use that application all that much, but it was more about the principle than the application.
The best part of this story is that the "follower" who tweeted with me through DM, and subsequently blocked is quite well known and works in the PR field (So I guess that means they have a right to dictate what I can and cannot use on mobile devices that I bought and paid for, on an account that I have maintained... WRONG).
Way to stick to your guns while shooting your self in the foot.
Do I regret my decision? No I don't.
It's called being true to one's self ILR (in real life) and ISM(in social media) I would never put up with an ultimatum IRL so why would I put up with them in ISM.
So there you have it. I shot my self in the foot, but at least I'm consistent.

Hello... err. Nah Let's go with SUP?

Not a fan of those "Hello World" type posts. That phrase seems to be every where. Every new twitter account every new WordPress blog... Just seems a touch overused.

My name is Christine and I guess as you've probably already read in my "About Me" Page I love Social Media. I blog (albeit not well) use Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and countless other tools and applications related to SM.

This blog space is going to follow my journey into the SM universe. I will be posting about the things I learn, like, dislike, tips, news and experiences. I'm not sure if this will become a journal of sorts or possibly a means by which people will learn about SM and it's vast variety of uses and pitfalls.

So... Sup?
